EBRD and BoA: Immigration and aging remain key challenges for the economy

The Albanian economy is facing significant challenges such as the rapid aging of the population and the emigration of young people. To curb these phenomena, the EBRD and the Bank of Albania underline the need for sustainable projects and investments.

The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, emphasizes that emigration, population aging and labor shortages pose serious risks to the economy. He emphasizes that this demographic turning point requires increased attention and long-term solutions.

“As fewer and fewer people enter the labor market, more and more are dependent on pension systems and healthcare. These changes are putting pressure on productivity, public finances, policy prioritization and long-term growth prospects in different regions,” said Gent Sejko.

For the EBRD's Country Director for Albania, Ekaterina Solovova, investments and projects that create jobs are good opportunities to support a sustainable economy.

“In 2025, the EBRD was engaged in 31 projects worth 217 million euros. Of this amount, 111 million euros were invested in sustainable infrastructure in transport and energy. We also supported tourism, agritourism, youth and the inclusion of women in business ,” said Solovova.

At the presentation of the 2025-2026 Transition Report, the need for coordinated actions and political will to reform the pension system, modernize the labor market, and clear migration policies was discussed./ EuronewsAlbania
