The war in the Middle East hits online shopping; orders from TEMU and AMAZON

The war in the Middle East hits online shopping, orders from Temu, Shein and Amazon will cost more and may be delayed up to 45 days...

The military conflict in the Middle East has begun to directly affect global trade and online shopping. Shipping companies and e-commerce giants are warning that orders from Temu, Shein and Amazon could be delayed and cost more for consumers.

Military tensions in the region have led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping lanes for oil and goods. Logistics analysts report that the blockade of this route has forced shipping companies to change ship routes and increase rates.

Major shipping companies have notified customers of additional charges due to the risk of war. French company CMA CGM has imposed a new fee it calls an “emergency conflict surcharge.” German company Hapag-Lloyd has added a “War Risk Surcharge.” These additional costs are passed on to sellers and then to customers.

Some companies have begun diverting ships via the Cape of Good Hope in Africa to avoid the danger zones in the Persian Gulf. This route is much longer and takes weeks to complete.

AFP reported that Amazon has extended the delivery period for some products by at least 10 days. In some cases, the platform is showing delivery times of 35 to 45 days for products that usually arrive in less than 35 days.

An Amazon spokesperson told the media that the company is changing operations due to the security situation in the region and is cooperating with local authorities to protect employees and partners.

The situation worsened after two Amazon data centers in the United Arab Emirates and a facility in Bahrain suffered damage from drone attacks. CNBC reported that the facilities were temporarily out of service after drones hit the installations and caused a fire.

Temu and Shein have not given an official response to the possible delays. AFP reported that both platforms have warned of several days of delays in deliveries due to the situation in international transport.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical hub for regional trade. It connects Dubai's Jebel Ali port, one of the world's largest container ports and a distribution hub for more than a dozen countries in the region.

Not only oil is transported through this route, but also vehicles from Germany, industrial machinery, agricultural products from France, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Any disruption in this maritime corridor creates a chain reaction in the global economy.

Experts warn that if the conflict continues, delays and price hikes in online commerce could last for months. For consumers, this means a new reality, more expensive orders and longer waits for packages arriving from abroad.
