US President Donald Trump said his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, knows the consequences if the latter militarily attacks Taiwan. He has threatened the Chinese president but has not clarified whether Washington would intervene militarily to defend the Far Eastern island.
Trump said the Taiwan issue was not discussed at all during his meeting with Xi in South Korea, the two leaders' first face-to-face meeting in six years.
When asked if he would order US forces to take action in the event of a Chinese attack, Trump responded by saying: “You’ll know if it happens. He knows the answer .” The US president avoided further clarification, stating that he cannot reveal my secrets. “The other side knows,” he added.
According to Trump, Xi and his close associates have openly stated that they would do nothing while I am president, as they are aware of the consequences.
