The official visit of the Syrian interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to Washington, D.C. next week has been confirmed. Al-Sharaa, a prominent former rebel leader, will meet with US President Donald Trump on November 10.
This will be the first visit by a Syrian leader to the United States since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. A senior White House official confirmed the news to Fox News Digital, stressing that the visit is part of the Trump administration's efforts to restore stability to the region.
"This meeting will discuss next steps for a stable Syria and possible economic cooperation ," the official said, without giving further details on the agenda.
Trump and al-Sharaa first met in May of this year, during the US president's visit to Saudi Arabia. Trump spoke enthusiastically about their conversation, describing al-Sharaa as "a young, attractive, strong guy."
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump added: " He has a strong past, a real fighter. He has a real chance to keep the country stable."
These words came despite the history of al-Sharaa, who was previously known by the nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Jolani and has been a leader of al-Qaeda in Syria.
