Trump pardons former Honduran president, sentenced to 45 years in prison

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been released from prison in the United States, where he was serving a 45-year sentence for drug and arms trafficking.

Hernandez's wife, Ana Garcia, said in a post on social media that the former president was released after being pardoned by US President Donald Trump.

After almost four years of pain, waiting, and difficult trials, my husband, Juan Orlando Hernandez, has regained his freedom, thanks to the presidential pardon granted by President Donald Trump.

The release of the information came a few days after the presidential election in Honduras, in which Trump supported candidate Nasri Asfora of the conservative National Party, who is facing liberal Salvador Nasralla.

The final vote count showed that the two candidates were almost equal, winning just under 40% of the vote.

Asfoura's party forged a close partnership with Washington under Hernandez, who governed from 2014 to 2022 and was arrested shortly after leaving office.

Hernandez was convicted in the US in June 2024 and sentenced to 45 years in prison for helping turn Honduras into a "narco-state", according to US prosecutors, who said he used his presidency to facilitate smugglers transporting large amounts of cocaine into the United States.
