In the ongoing war of attrition in Ukraine, the Russian military is introducing a new and unique defense against Ukrainian suicide drone attacks.
The modified armored units, which are making the rounds on social media, are being called "hedgehog tanks" (Igelpanzer) by military bloggers.
Following the "turtle tanks" and "hedgehog tanks" improvisations, new photos and videos have emerged of T-72B3 and T-80BVM tanks, which have been fitted with elaborate metal mesh and wire structures designed to explosively activate drones before they hit the vehicle or destroy their propellers.
Images published by both the Russian state agency Sputnik and the pro-Ukrainian Vodohrai Telegram account show tanks carrying armor and jamming systems, which can reduce the effectiveness of enemy explosives and block the operation of drones.
However, according to experts, additional modifications will increase the weight of the tanks, thereby limiting their speed and maneuverability on the ground. As experience shows, the “turtle tanks” and the new “hedgehog tanks” are not invulnerable.
Despite the flaws, these modifications make Ukrainian drone attacks more difficult, which require an average of eight drones to destroy a Russian tank.
Last May, a video released by a Ukrainian unit showed the destruction of a “hedgehog tank.” However, the success was not due to the metal mesh: the Ukrainian suicide drone reportedly struck directly through the vehicle’s open hood.
