Meeting with Trump in Hungary; will Putin be arrested on European soil?
Trump and Putin in Alaska

After the Alaska fiasco, another round of Trump-Putin talks is set to take place in Europe. The Kremlin confirms that a summit between the presidents could take place within two weeks, or a little later. However, it clarifies that there is much to be resolved before a date can be set for the next face-off between the Russian and American leaders.

Trump and Putin agreed on Thursday to hold a second summit on the war in Ukraine, temporarily in Budapest, after an August 15 meeting in Alaska that failed to produce anything concrete.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will have to call each other and schedule a meeting to resolve many issues before the summit.

Peskov added that Russia remains open to a solution to end the war in Ukraine peacefully. Before moving to a handshake, the parties must also address the issue of the arrest warrant issued for Vladimir Putin's head.

The International Criminal Court is demanding that Hungary implement the ruling, but Budapest guarantees that there will be no handcuffs for the Kremlin chief, only a red carpet.

"We welcome President Vladimir Putin with respect. Of course, we will make sure that he enters Hungary, has successful negotiations here and then returns home. There is no need for any kind of consultation with anyone. We are a sovereign country here," said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Russian President Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke by phone to discuss the upcoming summit. The Kremlin reports that "Orban gave Putin guarantees for the summit."

The European Union does not set red lines on this issue. Putin is on the sanctions list, but there is no travel ban, a European Commission spokeswoman said. She added that the UN Court's arrest warrant is a matter for individual EU member states to decide on.
