"It's an American proposal," Putin's former advisor denies

A former adviser to Vladimir Putin, Sergei Markov, denies that Russia was behind the peace plan that emerged after a meeting between a sanctioned Russian official and a US special envoy.

"It's American ," Sergei Markov tells Sky News, despite the plan supporting key Russian demands.

"There are no points for the main Russian demands, such as stopping political repression. The 28 points of the proposals are a very good basis for diplomatic negotiations. We have some positive mood in Russia about this, but not very much ," he added.

He further accused Europe and Ukraine of wanting to continue the war, despite Russia unilaterally initiating and pursuing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Markov claims that "it is not a war for territory," even though Russia has taken most of Donbas and parts of the Zaporizhia region by force.

" This is Donald Trump's mistake. Russia does not need so much territory, Russia needs the Russian identity of Ukraine ," he said, adding that the withdrawal of Russian troops is impossible.

Recall that a few hours ago, US Senators claimed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio told them that this was a Russian plan revealed by a representative of Moscow, which the US had agreed to pass on to Ukraine to review and then respond to.

"Secretary Rubio called us this afternoon. I think he made it very clear to us that we are the beneficiaries of a proposal that was submitted to one of our representatives. It's not our recommendation, it's not our peace plan. It's a proposal that was accepted ," Republican Senator Mike Rounds, who is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was quoted as saying on Saturday.

This statement has sparked a huge debate, despite claims that have been strongly denied by the US State Department.
