The United States is planning to accelerate the withdrawal of its forces from military bases in Europe and will present proposals to NATO allies next month, the German weekly Welt am Sonntag reported, citing an unidentified Pentagon source.
In May, Washington announced it intends to withdraw 5,000 US soldiers from Germany, a move that many analysts link to President Donald Trump's clashes with European allies over foreign policy and security issues.
Germany hosts about 35,000 US soldiers, more than any other European country, remaining one of the main centers of the US military presence on the continent.
The US Department of Defense had previously stated that the withdrawal process would be completed within a period of six to twelve months.
However, Welt am Sonntag does not specify how soon this plan is expected to be implemented nor which areas will be affected by the reduction in the US military presence.
According to the report, the US is expected to officially present the new plans to its allies during the upcoming NATO summit.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.
