Two people are still missing in Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia region after three apartments collapsed in the Cormons area, near Gorizia. The news was confirmed by the Italian fire service in an official statement.
According to authorities, the collapse of the buildings is suspected to have been caused by a landslide, after hours of heavy rain overnight. Searches are continuing at the scene for a minor and an elderly woman, while another person has been pulled out alive by emergency teams.
The powerful storms that hit the region have brought numerous floods and landslides, especially in the provinces of Udine and Gorizia.
Authorities reported that rivers had overflowed their banks, blocking roads and isolating entire areas. Specialized teams from Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna were sent to help deal with the situation.
The extreme weather has also caused flooding, extensive damage and traffic difficulties in other parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of six areas put on alert due to storms, along with Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Tuscany and Umbria.
Scientists say the climate crisis caused by greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, extreme storms and flash floods more frequent and intense.
