Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he had a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Mojtaba Khamenei, the first public confirmation that the new leader of the Islamic Republic has been seen by a senior official since his appointment following the death of Ali Khamenei.

During a meeting with union and market representatives, Pezeshkian revealed that he had held a conversation of about two and a half hours with Mojtaba Khamenei, although he did not provide details on the time, place, or topics discussed during the meeting.

"What impressed me more than anything else in this meeting was the deeply sincere and humble manner, perspective, and demeanor, an approach that transformed the atmosphere into one based on trust, calm, empathy, and direct dialogue," Pezeshkian declared.

Mojtaba Khamenei took over the leadership of the Islamic Republic after the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed during US and Israeli airstrikes on February 28.

Since his appointment, the new Iranian leader has not appeared publicly and has not released any audio or video material, prompting widespread speculation about his health.

According to a New York Times report, citing four Iranian officials, Mojtaba Khamenei suffered serious injuries in the attacks and underwent several surgeries on his legs and arms. The report also claimed that he had difficulty speaking due to severe burns to his face and lips.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also stated earlier that the Iranian leader had been injured and "most likely disfigured", however Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed these claims.

Speculation has increased even more after the publication of a mural in Iran where Mojtaba Khamenei appeared alongside figures considered "martyrs" of the Islamic Republic, including his father Ali Khamenei and former Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Tasnim news agency sparked backlash after referring to Mojtaba Khamenei as the "martyred leader of the revolution," before later calling the description a mistake.
