The containment dome at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine is no longer safe after being damaged by a Russian drone last February. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced today, after conducting an inspection of the site last week. Essentially, this means that the protective shield built over the former power plant is no longer able to prevent radiation leaks.
On February 14, the defensive shield was hit by a drone: Ukraine blamed Russia, which denied any responsibility. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky released a video showing the attack, the damage caused to the shield by the explosion, and the fire that was extinguished shortly afterwards.
Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

IAEA alarm
According to the findings, the facility, built in 2019 to contain radioactive material after the 1986 disaster, has lost the ability to perform its primary function due to the damage it has sustained. "The inspection confirmed that the facility has lost its key safety components, including containment capacity, but also found that no permanent damage has been caused to its monitoring systems," said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
The shield, built in 2016, is a large steel and concrete structure that covers the former nuclear power plant's number 4 reactor, the one that exploded in 1986, causing the worst nuclear accident in history, and which is still radioactive and dangerous.
