The US Treasury Department has warned that it may impose sanctions on shipping companies that pay fees to Iran for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, even if these payments are made in the form of charitable donations to Iranian NGOs.
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said it was aware of Iran's demands for payment for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. It said Iran could offer "various payment options, including currency, digital assets, compensation, informal exchanges, or other in-kind payments, such as nominal charitable donations to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Bonyad Mostazafan, or Iranian embassy accounts."
"OFAC is issuing this warning to inform U.S. and non-U.S. citizens of the sanctions risks associated with making these payments to the Iranian regime or seeking assurances from it for safe passage," the advisory said, noting that "these risks exist regardless of the method of payment."
"The Strait of Hormuz is Iran's atomic bomb and enriching uranium to 60% is a symbol of our strength," Ali Nijjad, deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament, said on Friday. He added that following the order of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, the Straits will never return to their pre-war state.
