An Ohio man was indicted by a federal grand jury earlier this week for threatening to kill Vice President JD Vance.

The Justice Department reported that 33-year-old Shannon Mathre has been charged with threatening to kill Vance while the vice president was visiting Ohio last month.

According to the lawsuit, Mathre said he would find Vance and "use the M14 automatic weapon to kill him."

Mathre was arrested by the Secret Service on Friday.

During Mathre's court appearance on Friday, his lawyer, Neil McElroy, said Mathre's health problems made it unlikely he could have carried out the threat.

"Anyone who spends time in a room with Mr. Mathre or has any knowledge of his condition, physical and mental, can see that it is a farce," McElroy said.

McElroy did not provide any details about Mathre's health problems, but said Mathre has "some mental disabilities and a number of other health problems."

However, the Justice Department and the Secret Service took the threats seriously and launched an investigation, which resulted in Mathre's arrest.

"Thank you to the federal, state and local partners who worked together to bring this depraved individual to justice," said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

While investigating the alleged threats, the Justice Department reported that investigators discovered that Mathre was in possession of digital files depicting child sexual abuse.

According to the Department of Justice, Mathre received and distributed sexually explicit images involving minors between December 31, 2025, and January 21, 2026.

This second charge carries a potentially harsher sentence, the Associated Press reported. If convicted, Mathre could face up to 20 years in prison. In comparison, the charges Mathre faces in connection with the threat against Vance carry a maximum sentence of five years.

"Our prosecutors are vigorously prosecuting this despicable threat against Vice President Vance," said Attorney General Pamela Bondi.

"You can hide behind a screen, but you can't hide from this Department of Justice," she added.
