United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the ceasefire in the Middle East remains extremely fragile, comparing the current situation to "a small fire" that risks spreading into a wider conflict.
In a reaction published on the social network X, Guterres stressed that recent developments have been accompanied by more intense attacks and a deterioration of the situation on the ground.
"This week has brought wider attacks and a further escalation of tensions, while the ceasefire looks more like a small fire than a lasting peace," he declared.
The UN chief warned that the risk of a return to full-scale fighting remains high and called on all parties to seriously engage in a diplomatic solution.
"We should not underestimate the risk that this small fire will turn into a big blaze. There is no more room for excuses," Guterres said, calling for concrete steps towards reducing tensions and reaching a lasting agreement.
