The European Commission is using artificial intelligence to speed up its work with future EU members. Two officials from the Commission working on enlargement told POLITICO that their department has been using an artificial intelligence tool to assess the laws of candidate countries to ensure they comply with EU law, as staff struggle to cope with a growing workload caused by so many countries knocking on the bloc’s door.

Officials said the AI tool used was the Commission's own creation. The EU executive launched GPT@EC, an AI-generating tool for its staff, in 2024 amid privacy and security fears over US services such as ChatGPT and Claude.

Several countries are racing towards EU membership, putting pressure on staff in the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood (DG ENEST), the department that manages the candidates' bids, said the two officials. They were granted anonymity to speak freely.

Ukraine and Moldova entered the first phase of accession on Monday, a significant milestone on their path to joining the bloc, while Montenegro this week closed two more accession chapters, bringing the total to 16 out of 33.

Albania is also making progress in its membership application, while those of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Georgia have progressed slowly or have stalled completely.

Iceland will hold a referendum in August to decide whether to restart its bid to join the EU, with geopolitics giving new urgency to countries' attempts to join the bloc since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and US President Donald Trump's threats to annex Greenland.

"In the last 16, 17 months, we have achieved more than in the previous 15 years," said Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.

But candidate countries are skeptical that artificial intelligence is the answer to the Commission’s workload. Two officials from different candidate countries told POLITICO that the tool should only be used for translation and simple tasks, not for more complex issues.

One of the officials acknowledged that the Commission's workload has increased significantly in recent years, putting pressure on staff, but urged caution with reliance on artificial intelligence, arguing that it could lead to errors.

Other departments in the Commission are using the AI tool. The three main EU institutions have banned staff from using artificially generated videos and images in official communications. / Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Politico"

* Note : Albania is also using the same technique for the integration process. The tasks given by the EU are fed into 'AI Chats' which then produce the final product. They are then sent for analysis, as Politico reports, by another AI bot.
