World Cup security is being heightened by claims by the pro-Iranian hacker group Handala, which claims to have hacked into FBI drone systems and has threatened possible action against the tournament, which began this week.
According to a statement released by extremist monitoring organization SITE Intelligence Group, hackers claim to have had access to data collected by the FBI's FPV (First Person View) drones "for months."
According to the same statement, these drones are used for counter-terrorism operations and have facial recognition and license plate capture capabilities.
Threats to the World Cup
In her message, Handala made indirect threats against the tournament that began yesterday in America. "You better tighten up the World Cup security. We don't like some of these teams at all. Remember that FPVs are everywhere. You never know when someone might end up right on top of a team bus," the group said, according to SITE.
US authorities have already announced that they are using drones around tournament stadiums to protect against unauthorized flights and other potential threats.
At the same time, a ban has been imposed on drone flights over stadiums hosting matches, as well as over official fan events.
Although Handala published photos and videos that he claims are from suspected compromised drones, the SITE Intelligence Group disputes the authenticity of the data.
According to its analysis, one of the videos presented as evidence of the breach was created in December 2024 by a software company for advertising purposes, showing the use of drone technology by a US police department to record damage after tornadoes.
Previous cyberattacks
Handala claimed responsibility for another cyberattack last March, when he claimed to have hacked the email account of FBI Director Cass Patel, posting personal photos and other material online.
The US State Department has already put a bounty on members of the group, offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to their identification.
Increased vigilance in the US
The US Department of Justice has repeatedly warned of the risk of cyberattacks by pro-Iranian actors following the recent conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.
So far, US authorities have not confirmed that there has been a breach of FBI systems, while investigations into the group's claims are ongoing.
