Germany must accelerate preparations in the face of the risk of a possible Russian aggression on NATO territory by 2029, or even earlier. The warning comes from the head of the German army, Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, in an interview with Politico.
"We must be prepared... We must be ready to fight," said German Army Chief Christian Freuding, the head of the German army.
According to him, NATO allies share the same assessment of the capabilities that Russia can develop in the coming years.
“2029 is not a German timeline. It is intelligence agreed upon by NATO,” Freuding said. “ All 32 NATO partners agree that Russia could have the capability to invade a NATO partner country in 2029.”
However, he stressed that such an action could happen even earlier. According to Freuding, despite the high cost that Russia has paid in the war in Ukraine, Moscow could manage to rebuild its military potential in a relatively short period of time.
His comments come as defense officials in Europe are warning that Russia could regain the capabilities needed to pose a direct conventional threat to NATO countries. For defense planners, 2029 is seen as a critical target for closing gaps in the continent's military readiness, weapons production and defense capabilities.
Freuding's remarks reflect growing concerns that Russia could test the alliance's resolve at a time when European countries are still in the process of strengthening their military capabilities.
This situation is also affecting the internal debate in Germany regarding military procurement and the expansion of the capacities of the defense industry. Freuding assessed that Berlin has taken important steps to accelerate the processes of arms supply and to increase industrial production.
However, he warned that Germany cannot rely solely on long-term armament programs, as their development and deployment take years.
