New EU pact enters into force today, migrants face tougher rules

The European Union has launched the full implementation of the new Pact on Asylum and Migration, a sweeping reform that aims to change the way migration flows are handled across the bloc.

One of the most important and controversial innovations of the reform is the possibility of establishing return centers in countries outside the European Union. These structures can be used to transfer migrants and asylum seekers whose applications have been definitively rejected by the competent authorities.

According to the European Commission, most member states have made significant progress in preparing for the implementation of the new rules. This includes legal changes, strengthening external border controls and establishing mechanisms to protect fundamental rights.

The new pact also provides for faster and more harmonized procedures for examining asylum applications, as well as increased cooperation between member states on migration management.

The "Solidarity Pool" mechanism, which aims to more fairly distribute the responsibilities and costs of migration management among European Union countries, will also play an important role.

Adopted in 2024, the Pact constitutes the largest reform of the European migration and asylum system in the last decade, aiming for a more coordinated approach to migratory challenges.
