French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has confirmed that one of the five French citizens repatriated from Tenerife on Sunday showed symptoms of hantavirus during the flight to France.
"As a result, these five passengers were immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice," Lecornu stated in a post on platform X.
According to him, the people involved are receiving medical attention and will undergo laboratory tests and a full health assessment. Lecornu added that he will sign a decree imposing isolation measures also for close contacts of the passengers, in order to protect public health.
Meanwhile, dozens of passengers have disembarked from the cruise ship at the center of the hantavirus outbreak, while authorities expect all remaining people on board to leave by Monday, as part of a coordinated international operation.
The passengers underwent health checks on Sunday after the ship docked in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Spanish health authorities said all were asymptomatic. However, the case of the French passenger who developed symptoms upon returning home has raised additional concerns among authorities.
Since the ship departed Argentina last month, three deaths have been linked to hantavirus, a rare disease usually transmitted by exposure to the urine or feces of infected rodents.
According to the World Health Organization, the risk to the public remains low. Health authorities have also emphasized that hantavirus differs significantly from Covid-19, both in terms of its mode of transmission and the level of spread.
