President Donald Trump did not elaborate on the terms of a possible peace deal between Kiev and Moscow during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington. Trump said he had no idea whether Ukraine would have to cede territory as part of a peace deal with Russia.
“You never know. War is very interesting. You never know. You just never know with war. With war and peace, you never know, ” Trump said.
The US president has taken a mixed stance on the issue. Before his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August, he said that "territorial exchanges" would be necessary to end the war.
Later, he changed his mind, saying he believed Ukraine could regain all the territory now occupied by Russia.
Today's response suggested that the president is waiting to see how negotiations proceed before offering a different perspective.
