Robert Grilec, the head of the Criminal Police in Croatia, was killed this morning in a gun attack at a cafe inside a shopping mall in Krapina, Croatian media report.
The incident occurred around 08:00, while authorities have launched investigations to clarify the circumstances of the crime.
Chief Grilec, 52, who was off duty at the time, was shot dead by his neighbor, who then attempted suicide.
Witnesses to the incident, cafe employees, said the attacker entered the bar without saying a word, shot the police officer three times in front of about fifteen guests, and then went outside and shot himself.
One of the waitresses, who was taking orders from the deceased at the time of the attack, stated that she had seen the attacker earlier that morning circling the car in front of the facility and observing the interior.
The Krapina-Zagorje Police Department confirmed the incident, stating that the attacker, after causing himself serious injuries, was transferred to the Dubrava Clinical Hospital by ambulance helicopter.
Both the murdered policeman and the perpetrator are residents of Krapina and lived nearby, and according to eyewitnesses, the attack was not preceded by any quarrel.
Index writes that in 2018, the murdered head of the criminal police, Robert Grilec, was decorated by then-president Kolinda Grabar Kitarović for his honorable and exemplary service.
