Saturday's shooting also comes nearly a month after what US authorities described as an attempted assassination of the president on April 25 during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner at a Washington hotel.

A gunman was killed Saturday evening after a shootout with US Secret Service and FBI agents near the White House in Washington, US authorities have confirmed.
According to American media, the suspect has been identified as Nasire Best, 21, previously known to the Secret Service and with a documented history of mental health problems.
According to the Secret Service, shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time, the young man pulled a gun from his bag and opened fire. Agents immediately returned fire, seriously wounding the perpetrator, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities also confirmed that a bystander was injured in the incident, but no details were given on his condition. No Secret Service agents were injured in the crash.
Nasire Best had attempted to enter the White House in July 2025 and was arrested near it by federal agents. After his arrest, he spent a period in a psychiatric facility.
According to the same sources, the 21-year-old had been living in Washington for about 18 months and used a revolver during the attack.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House but was never put in danger. According to investigative sources, he had previously posted on social media that he wanted to harm Trump.
FBI Director Kash Patel released a message saying: "The FBI is on scene and supporting the Secret Service in responding to the shooting near the White House compound. We will update the public as more information becomes available."
Chris Flanagan, host of local channel DC News Now, who took shelter in the White House briefing room, reported that about 30 shots were heard, while the security lockdown measures were then lifted.
A CBS News producer also estimated that at least 20 bullets had been fired.
The incident comes less than three weeks after another incident, when a gunman opened fire on a Secret Service agent near the route of JD Vance's motorcade outside the White House.
“A civilian behind the agent was wounded in the leg,” the Justice Department said. Agents returned fire, wounding the perpetrator in the hand, left arm, and upper abdomen.
