An Albanian man, who is on trial for breaking into the apartment of a Belgian minister, from where he stole only 50 euros, risks 1 year in prison and a fine of 1600 euros. This was requested by the Belgian prosecution in a court case where the defendant is the Albanian, who is described by the Belgian media as a "painter".
The incident occurred on January 7, 2023, when a thief broke into the home of the Minister of Education, Justice and Employment, Zuhal Demir (NV-A). Her apartment was located in Genk, and the thief entered through a window. The thief took only 50 euros from a cash box. The investigation later led to the identification of the suspected perpetrator, as he had left traces on the cash box.
The man, a painter from Albania, is being tried by the criminal panel of the Court in Tongeren.
"His DNA was taken as a suspect in similar cases," the public prosecutor explained, describing the evidence against the accused. He said that "his DNA is also known in Germany and Spain. In another case, he was convicted together with two accomplices, but their DNA tested negative in this case."
The Albanian was also sentenced to three years in prison last October for "aggravated" theft and association with criminals.
"A burglary in a house is a major violation of one's sense of security," the prosecutor concluded. She requested a one-year prison sentence and a fine of 1,600 euros for the burglary suspect.
The defendant's lawyer provided a valid reason why her client was not present at the hearing.
"He has an 8-day entry ban in Europe. A few years ago, he came to Belgium to look for work, but that plan failed. He met the wrong friends and committed thefts with them."
After the painter was temporarily released from his previous sentence, he returned to Albania.
"He has a permanent address and works there, and thus compensates for the damage," his lawyer argued.
She also objected to exceeding the reasonable time limit.
The lawyer requested a simple guilty verdict, contingent on the sentence the man received last year for similar criminal offenses.
"It is not in anyone's best interest for him to be brought from Albania to Belgium for an additional sentence," the lawyer explained.
Minister Zuhal Demir did not file a civil lawsuit in this matter.
A decision will be made on January 5th.
