With this call, as announced, the 54th protest is being held in front of the Parliament, while MPs are expected to gather in plenary session at 10:00.
The police have taken increased security measures, by armoring the area around the Parliament. A metal fence has been installed from the intersection of “Elbasan Street”, while the entrances to the institution are monitored by numerous police forces. The rally has seen an escalation of the situation, after protesters have thrown eggs and tomatoes at police officers. On the other hand, the police have responded with water and tear gas, in an attempt to disperse the crowd and keep the situation under control.
Other incidents were also reported during the tensions. Protesters blocked traffic near the intersection of “Elbasan Street”, and at one point clashed with police officers, preventing vehicles from passing.
Protesters also removed the metal fence placed in front of the Parliament and continued to throw eggs at the police. A water tanker also approached the area, while according to preliminary reports, it is suspected that two police officers were injured and were taken by ambulance to receive medical assistance.
An explosion was also heard in the courtyard of the Parliament, which is initially suspected to have been a bomb, while tensions between protesters and security forces continued.
Earlier, protesters gathered in front of the Parliament with the slogans "You do not represent us", while there were also clashes between citizens and police near the metal fence.
Meanwhile, from the majority, only the leader of the SP group, Taulant Balla, has reacted so far, labeling the protesters as terrorists who raise their hands against the State Police.
On the other hand, the leader of the Democratic Party , Sali Berisha, expressed support for the protest and called for the dissolution of Parliament, but at the same time chose the entrance protected by the police to enter the building.
"Its only responsible act is to declare its end, its dissolution and to open the way for the solution that all Albanian youth and citizens are seeking. Any other act is ultimately worthless, therefore, we are demanding today the self-declaration, the dissolution of this Parliament. This is the only right decision that Parliament can take today," said Berisha.
In light of the developments, the United States Embassy in Tirana has also called on American citizens to avoid areas surrounding the protest and to exercise increased caution when moving around the capital.
