For the first time, such a giant ship anchors on the Albanian coast
On September 6, 2025, the Port of Porto Romano in Durrës will host one of the most powerful symbols of the American military presence in Europe: the command ship USS Mount Whitney, the operational core of the US 6th Fleet.
This announced visit underscores the strategic partnership between Albania and the United States, as well as the shared determination to ensure security in the region.
The ship is expected to anchor in Porto Romano due to the technical depth offered by this port, the only one in the country that can handle the parameters of this giant ship, with a length of 193 meters, a width of 33 meters and a diving depth of 9.3 meters. This is the first time that a military vehicle of this category has been placed in an Albanian port.
During its stay in Durrës, the USS Mount Whitney will host an official ceremony with the participation of President Bajram Begaj, Minister of Defense Pirro Vengu, the Chief of Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces, the Commander of the Naval Force, as well as the Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy, Nancy Van Horn. The reception organized on board will be a strong symbolic act of the importance that the US attaches to Albania as a military partner in the Adriatic and NATO.
Mount Whitney, normally based in Gaeta, Italy, is a command platform for complex maritime operations and represents the critical link between U.S. naval forces and international security structures. It operates with a mixed crew of military and civilian personnel, in support of U.S. strategic interests in Europe and Africa.
This visit comes at a time when security in the region is in increased focus and where Albania is increasingly affirming itself as a key ally in the Mediterranean. The arrival of the “USS Mount Whitney” is not just a military maneuver, it is a political, diplomatic and strategic signal for the entire region. The US seems to be sending a message to Moscow that they are the ones who 'rule' the Balkans. This is because on September 2, the same ship anchored in Montenegro. /Pamphlet
