Albanian journalist in the United States of America, Denion Ndrenika, has spoken about the talks between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at the historic summit in Alaska.
He raised doubts about reaching any lasting peace agreement, while emphasizing that Russia is predisposed to not reaching such a solution.
The journalist also said that even if any document is signed, it will be formal and temporary.
“What impressed me was Putin’s stance, which tried to emphasize that Alaska has been a Russian territory and that Russia is a close neighbor of the US, despite the oceans that separate it. 18-20% of Ukraine is under Russian rule. I believe that Russia will never reach a peace agreement. Even if any document is signed, it will be only formal and temporary,” said Ndrenika, recalling the December 5, 1994 talks in Budapest, when Ukraine exchanged its nuclear arsenal with Russia and received promises of territorial integrity.
"The head of the Ukrainian secret service then said that within 20 years Russia will attack Crimea and this happened in 2014. So it is almost impossible for Russia, as a Slavic people with a mentality similar to the Serbs in the Balkans, to respect a peace agreement. And it is very difficult for it to allow democratic development on the ground," he added in an interview with "Euronews Albania".
Ndrenika also said that of course Russia has interests in reaching an agreement with Ukraine, but this will be very difficult as it is impossible to satisfy both sides.
"Of course, Russia has interests in peace, whether they are in introducing the Russian language in Ukraine or in protecting the Russian community there. But in a final peace agreement, Russia's demands are unacceptable, since the other side will not accept that four territories are under Russian control. So, it is very difficult to reach an agreement that satisfies both sides, if Russia maintains this position," the journalist concluded.
