Public transport associations have raised concerns about the worsening situation in the sector, highlighting the significant increase in costs, mainly due to the increase in fuel prices and the lack of support measures from institutions.
According to them, if immediate action is not taken, around 450 lines across the country could cease service by next week.
"In the absence of a rapid and concrete intervention by the responsible institutions, the operators will not have the financial means to cope with the normal continuation of activity from next week. Consequently, if the institutions do not react, as we emphasized above, from next week the continuity of public service for citizens will be seriously jeopardized," the letter says.
The Association of Urban Transport and the Association of Urban and Interurban Transport have once again addressed the responsible ministries, led by Delina Ibrahimaj and Enea Karakaçi, requesting the urgent approval of a fuel compensation scheme, similar to the one implemented in 2022.
The operators report that after a meeting held on April 1, another meeting was promised on April 7, but it was not held and so far there has been no official reaction from the institutions, which according to them has increased financial uncertainty in the sector.
In their demands, they emphasize that the increase in costs for maintenance, spare parts and especially fuel has significantly burdened activity, requesting an emergency support package and diesel compensation at the level of 100 lek per liter.
The associations warn that in the absence of concrete measures, the sector risks reducing the fleet and decreasing the frequency of lines, up to and including complete interruption of service, with direct consequences for citizens.
The request also includes fiscal relief, such as reducing excise duty, sales tax and VAT, as necessary measures to stabilize the situation and avoid the collapse of the sector.
