Sali Berisha will run alone in the May 23 elections for the leadership of the Democratic Party, a process he himself has described as “modern.” But for political analyst Kreshnik Spahiu, this is proof that there has never been a real competition for the leadership of the party in the DP.
Spahiu said that Berisha has built a political model for decades where control over the party has never really been put into question.
"Berisha has everything to the last, which means the next rally will be the greatest in history according to him, the next elections will be the most modern according to him, the next protest will be the last one that will bring down the government, according to him. So I think this is the quality and character of a worn-out politician who is 40 years old and has nothing more to offer than repeating his political rhetoric," Spahiu told "Report TV".
He stated that in essence Berisha has never held real elections in the Democratic Party, emphasizing that control over the party has always been in his hands, even when he did not formally hold the position of chairman.
"In essence, Berisha has never held elections, neither within the party nor outside it. This means that even when he was not the leader, everyone understood that he commanded the party. No one thought that when Berisha was the president of Albania, Tritan Shehu was the leader of the DP. Everyone understood that Berisha was the party leader. Even when there were candidates, the race in the DP was with fictitious candidates," he declared.
Spahiu added that even in cases where there were candidates running against Berisha, the race in the DP was formal and with "fictitious" candidates.
Comparing the DP with the Socialist Party, he said that the Socialists have had strong contests for the party leadership over the years. According to him, the fact that Edi Rama is not challenged today in the SP is related to the fact that he wins the elections, while the leadership debate usually arises among losing parties.
"This is the difference between the DP and the SP. The Socialists have developed strong and strong competitions, between Majko and Meta, between Meta or Nano, between Mejdan or Rama. In its entirety, the candidates in the SP have made a strong competition for the mayor. Those who try to compare the DP with the SP are unfair. There are people who say that Rama does not organize elections either, but there is a difference: throughout Europe, the party that wins the elections does not have a debate for the mayor. This means that the party that elects the prime minister is the people who have decided in a publicistic way who decide who will be the leader of the party that takes power. The debate takes place for the party that loses the elections," he said.
He accused Berisha of creating a harmful political model, which according to him is also being followed by other parties.
"Berisha's failure to resign has created a 40-year-old model, so even new parties follow the same model, neither renewing nor resigning. This is a very ugly model of blocking the political establishment," he said.
Spahiu criticized Sali Berisha's ability to win elections. In ironic tones, Spahiu said that the only possibility for Berisha to win elections is for the ballot to have only his name and the DP's name on it.
"Berisha, who has not won an election for more than 20 years, neither inside nor outside the party, has only one chance to win the elections: to have an unrivaled ballot. This is the only chance for Berisha to win the elections. He himself declares that Edi Rama will not leave with the elections and that there will be no elections with Edi Rama. He wants the SP not to participate in the elections and Edi Rama not to be in the race ," he said.
