Ottoman historian Olsi Jazexhi made a controversial statement during a television interview, where he called Albania's Independence Day a day of mourning.
He justified this statement by saying that today's Albania is a small province of Europe, which has gone through suffering and poverty, unlike Ottoman Albania, which he prefers more.
"As an Ottomanist, I have had days of mourning. I am Albanian, if I had it my way I would prefer to live in the time of the Ottoman Empire when we Albanians had an empire that stretched from Egypt to Yemen to Serbia. This Albania is a province of Europe, a country that has gone through all these tragedies, suffering and poverty, I do not believe it is better than that Ottoman Albania," he said to "MCN".
Albania's independence was achieved after 500 years of barbaric occupation by the Ottomans and their platform of Ottomanism. Ottomanism is a religious and racial doctrine to assimilate conquered peoples. Ottomanism took away the love for work, for the arts, for language and created a distorted relationship with time.
