The National Cyber Security Authority has raised the alarm about a fraud scheme circulating online. Through a platform called TXEX, this platform operates in a similar way to online pyramid schemes that have been busted previously.
The scam works through promises of quick profits with just one click, through cryptocurrency investments where investors are offered the opportunity to double the amount invested within a very short time. These promises have lured numerous Albanian citizens who have fallen prey to financial fraud and personal data theft.
Field expert Denisa Kele, in an interview for the show "Rudina" on TV Klan, said that this is not a new platform, but has been active for more than a year and has included employees distributed in every city, who promise citizens immediate and doubled profits within a few weeks.
With economic damage estimated to have reached up to $10 million, many of the victims are salaried workers who invested their savings without sufficient knowledge of cryptocurrencies or the risks associated with them.
Kele says that the lack of financial education is creating a breeding ground for such scams, confusing real cryptocurrencies with abusive schemes that take advantage of ignorance.
"Only in Albania is there news that has been circulating in recent weeks, but while this platform has been in existence for almost a year and maybe more. I gave the signals a year ago, there have been many people who have written to me and what is most beautiful is the fact that this is not a platform that only exists online.
These people who run these platforms in Albania have one or two people employed in every city who deal only with this thing, who promise citizens that the moment they give a sum of money, they will get back double this amount in two or three weeks. Citizens go and deposit this money with these people, while they withdraw some of it. It is a real pyramid scheme. I am very sorry.
Given that cryptocurrencies have now become a genuine investment tool and are operating all over the world and a country like Albania where many citizens are unaware, these pyramid schemes are confused with cryptocurrencies. The lost value is assumed to be up to 10 million dollars. What impresses me is that all these people who have invested are in a very high number and I can say that they are many salaried workers who invest their salaries in this.
They invest and since they get back double the first investment, they create trust and invest again. This is the trick of a pyramid scheme. All the people I have talked to so far do not believe that it is a pyramid scheme because they come and tell me that 'I won'", said the expert./tvklan.al
