"He started as an ordinary smuggler, but very quickly became the most wanted man on the planet." In the show "Opinion", journalist Artan Hoxha recounts how Pablo Escobar, the most notorious drug cartel in the world, built his empire by exploiting smuggling routes and then, with billions of dollars extracted from the American cocaine market, dominated the banking system from Panama to Switzerland. The money was so much that he didn't know where to put it, so he started burying it.
But the hidden wealth, which still lies underground today, became a "burden" when Escobar was left without access to his funds, locked in a house with his driver, unable to withdraw a single dollar. Not because he didn't have any, but because no one knew where they were hidden anymore.
He had drawn up a plan, made maps… but then he also killed those who helped him bury them. And so, his wealth became legend.
"Escobar started the drug trade by using smuggling lines. Over time, when he was at his peak, he became a very big problem, because with the large amount of money and especially the American dollar that he took out of the US, billions of dollars of the cartels placed in Panamanian banks were seized there.
He invested in Europe, including Swiss banks, his amount of money became so large that he did not know where to put it and buried it. That is why today there are large amounts of money there, from five to ten million dollars, they are still there to this day. Because after he buried it, he made a map and then killed the people he buried it with, and people did not know exactly where the money was. When he was left at home without money with the driver, he could not withdraw it, because he could not get the money that had been buried. Not that he did not have it, but they cut off all his resources", said Artan Hoxha.
