US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has begun an official 4-day visit to India, with the first stop being in Calcutta, where he paid homage at the tomb of Mother Teresa and visited the Missionaries of Charity center, the organization founded by the humanist of Albanian origin.
Rubio, who is known as a devout Catholic, was welcomed by nuns of the order of Mother Teresa, dressed in traditional white and blue saris, while he visited the humanitarian mission premises for about an hour and a half.
According to representatives of the organization, the American secretary was interested in working with the homeless, the seriously ill, and people affected by leprosy, expressing gratitude for the contribution of the Missionaries of Charity.

In a post on social media, Rubio praised the figure of Mother Teresa and her influence on the world.
" Mother Teresa left an extraordinary legacy of compassion and service. I had the honor of visiting the Missionaries of Charity today to pay homage to her legacy and to see a living example of the Catholic faith in action ," Rubio wrote.
The US secretary's visit comes at a delicate diplomatic moment, just a week after the apparent rapprochement between the United States and China.
After the stop in Kolkata, Rubio traveled to New Delhi, where he is expected to hold meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior Indian officials.
He will also attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the "Quad" group, which includes the US, India, Japan and Australia. The forum is seen as a strategic counterweight to China's influence in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region.
Beijing has repeatedly criticized the "Quad," seeing it as an attempt at strategic encirclement by Washington's Western allies and Asian partners.
