In April 2023, a large group of men escaped from a migrant accommodation centre, which was followed by a search operation across the United Kingdom.

Channel 4 has dedicated an episode titled "Invasion", which shows officers trying to find the group that escaped from Yarl's Wood detention center near Bedford.

Since its launch in September 2014, the documentary has captured the attention of the nation, detailing the investigations led by officers from Bedfordshire Police as they work around the clock to solve horrific crimes.

"Breakout", which aired on Sunday (December 14), follows the complex police investigation at Yarl's Wood Immigration Detention Centre in Milton Ernest near Bedford, after 8 Albanian detainees escaped while awaiting deportation.

Detective Constable Will Hodgkinson, who coordinated the nationwide search for Bedfordshire Police, said: "I have never seen a search of this scale against eight individuals."

"Of all the individuals involved, I don't think anyone has faced a challenge as big as this. While we do this every day, we tend not to do it on this scale and with this intensity," the detective added.

The Channel 4 show opens with security cameras showing a group of 13 men escaping the detention centre during a mass disorder, using gym equipment to climb over the site's fence.

Five of the escapees were captured later that night, but the other eight escaped, eluding police for weeks after splitting into smaller groups.

Some of the men eventually surrendered, but others were pulled over to various locations across the country, requiring Bedfordshire Police to work with forces in West Yorkshire, the West Midlands and London.

Hodgkinson specifically praised the Metropolitan Police, which provided resources on the same weekend as the King's coronation. Eight men who escaped from a migrant detention centre before finally leaving were jailed.

Bedfordshire Police also arrested five other men near Yarl's Wood shortly after the incident, in addition to the eight men who fled.

In total, 13 men were sentenced for the escape, totaling more than 21 years, as well as for drug-related and fraud offences.

Rizah Koka was one of 13 men who escaped, taking advantage of a riot.

Koka and another man, Mexhit Palushi, were arrested by Bedfordshire Police and the Metropolitan Police outside a cafe in Colindale on May 4, 2023. They had a pair of keys that led police to an address where £50,000 of cocaine, £63,000 of cannabis and £70,000 in cash were found.

While officers were searching the apartment, Samuel Boka appeared and was also arrested for his participation in the drug operation.

In December 2023, the three men were sentenced to a total of more than 14 years in prison at Luton Crown Court.

All three men pleaded guilty to involvement in the supply of cannabis and cocaine, as well as possession of criminal property.

Palushi was sentenced to five years and three months in prison, Koka was sentenced to five years in prison, which included a six-month sentence for escaping from lawful custody, and Boka was sentenced to four years.

Another man, who was 26 at the time of the escape, was jailed for 22 months after admitting to the escape.

Chief Inspector Matt Inwood from Bedfordshire Police, who led the investigation, said at the time of sentencing: "This was a dangerous and brazen escape attempt by men awaiting deportation."

"Our officers and staff in Bedfordshire, as well as law enforcement colleagues across the country, have spent thousands of hours trying to catch those who escaped. This behaviour was completely unacceptable and a flagrant breach of the law," he said.
