One of the strongest accusations that has been articulated in recent days by Prime Minister Edi Rama and exponents of the Socialist Party against Dritan Goxhaj is related to his positions on the war in Iran. In the podcast of the Pamphlet “Të Pashoq”, Goxhaj directly responded to these attacks, describing them as part of an old political mentality that labels as “enemy” anyone who expresses an opinion different from that of the government.
According to him, labels such as “Iranian agent”, “Russian agent” or other similar accusations are not new, but represent the continuation of a political culture that does not accept different opinions. Goxhaj argues that Albania has changed the political system, but not the mentality, adding that pluralism often remains only a facade when any critical voice is automatically declared an enemy.
Interview:
Edjona Dervishi: Rama has called you, or implied, an Iranian agent, and so on and so forth.
Dritan Goxhaj: This is not the first time that I have been labeled by people as an agent of Iran. I have also been labeled as an agent of Russia, like everything else. The same thing has always been done, so it has always worked like this.
The moment someone expresses an opinion that contradicts the larger public opinion or the general opinion directed by the ruling party, as it has always been, we are labeled.
It's not the first time. It's an old methodology inherited from '45 to '90. If you spoke up or said something true about the regime, about something that was wrong, you were automatically labeled as an American agent at that time. Back then, the enemy was America.
Whereas now the enemy is the enemies of America. And normally if you are labeled as an enemy, you will belong to this category. So it is the same mentality.
We have inherited the same mentality and this is the scariest and most shameful thing we have. Even though we say we have entered a different system, this shows that the system has not changed.
The system has simply evolved, it has become a little more dynamic, a little more open to some extent. We have created a multi-party system, but in our mentality we have remained one-party.
If you go against the party's current, you are automatically an enemy. And not just an enemy of the party, but you are also declared an enemy of Albania, of the country, and so on.
Ediona Dervishi: In short, false pluralism.
Dritan Goxhaj: Pluralism is just a facade, currently.
