The departure of MP Mariana Koçeku from the Socialist Party and her approach to the civic protest has sparked numerous debates in public opinion. While some protesters have seen this as a signal that dissatisfaction with the government is penetrating even within the ranks of the majority, there are also those who remain skeptical about the real motives for this positioning.
Asked by journalist Edjona Dervishi on the Pamflet podcast "Të Pashoq", Dritan Goxhaj said that he does not consider Koçek's departure an achievement of the protest. According to him, the fact that she was elected MP from the closed list of the Socialist Party leaves room for doubts, while he did not rule out the possibility that her move is part of a political game.
Dritan Goxhaj: A party leader or a member of parliament cannot appear on the podium, because it gives the protest a political dimension.
Mariana Koçeku can come to the protest as much as she wants. But if she wants to speak, she must resign from her mandate as an MP.
All MPs can participate in the protest, those who see that the system is rotten and needs change. But not on the podium, because it is automatically given a political slant and many people leave.
They don't have to worry about seeing MPs protesting. It's a public square and everyone has the right to be there. The protest is inclusive, not exclusive. The system needs to change for everyone.
Edjona Dervishi: Is Mariana Koçek's distancing from the Socialist Party and joining the protest sincere to you or is there a backstory?
Dritan Goxhaj: I am speaking personally, not on behalf of the coordination group.
Edjona Dervishi: Okay, as a protester.
Dritan Goxhaj: As a protester, I do not call it an achievement of the protest. I continue to view it with suspicion, because Mariana Koçeku is a deputy from the closed list of the Socialist Party, not from the open lists. And we all know how to get into the closed lists. If you are not a confidant of the mayor, you cannot get in there.
I don't rule out the possibility that at some point she became aware of what she saw within the system.
But there remains a small possibility. I continue to believe that it could be an individual game of Mariana Koçek, or of the groups that brought her there, or it could even be a game of the party itself.
