The Italian prosecution has launched investigations into the death of renowned Albanian actor Gjergji Lala at the "Umberto I" Polyclinic, following a report filed by his family.

According to Italian media, the family of actor Lala claim that he did not receive the necessary medical assistance and that his condition was not treated in time by health personnel. An investigation has been registered for the criminal offense of manslaughter.

"Our father died before our eyes, without anyone doing anything to help him," the family members stated in the complaint filed with the Italian authorities.

There are currently no people under investigation. The Italian prosecution is expected to first review the autopsy results to determine the circumstances of the death and decide on further steps in the proceedings.

According to reports, Gjergji Lala arrived at the "Umberto I" Polyclinic in a complicated health condition. However, family members claim that the situation did not seem critical enough to predict a fatal outcome.

Gjergji Lala was a well-known figure to the Albanian public, but he had been living and working in Italy for years. During his career, he participated in several well-known television and cinematographic productions. Among the series where he appeared are “Don Matteo”, “La Squadra”, “Gli Orologi del Diavolo” and “Romulus”. He also had roles in films such as “House of Gucci”, “Gangs of New York” and “Il papà buono”, directed by Ricky Tognazzi.

According to the reconstruction of events published by Italian media, the actor's health problems began on May 14. His sons, Renato and Claudio, took him to the emergency room of the Frosinone hospital due to kidney complications.

A few weeks earlier, Lala had undergone surgery on his bladder due to a tumor. Due to the complexity of the case, Frosinone doctors decided to transfer him to the Umberto I Polyclinic in Rome, where he was admitted under a code red.

During his hospital stay, several other complications were noted. One of them was a fractured femur. According to reports, it is still unclear when and where this injury occurred. It is not known whether the fracture occurred before his hospitalization or during his stay in the health facility. What is known is that the injury caused the actor severe pain.

He then underwent surgery to replace the catheter in his kidney. After the surgery, according to Italian media, he was infected with the Klebsiella bacteria. After about 20 days, he managed to overcome the infection, but his physical condition remained weakened.

From that moment, according to the reconstruction of the family, the actor's condition began to deteriorate rapidly. Later, he was affected by another bacterial infection, which the family considers as an element that may have influenced his death.

It will now be the investigation of the Rome Prosecutor's Office and the results of the autopsy that will determine the exact causes of Gjergji Lala's death and whether there was any responsibility on the part of the health personnel during his treatment in the hospital.

Gjergji Lala Albanian actor and director, was born on December 6, 1947 in Lushnje and passed away on June 17, 2026 in Italy. He has played many roles in Albanian theater and cinema. The most notable is the role of Mihal Gramenos in the Albanian film "Freedom or Death".
