1,300 laid off by Rubio, Yuri Kim protests in front of DASH; consoles employees

Among the protesters, former US ambassador Yuri Kim was spotted standing on the sidewalk and comforting laid-off employees.

At the behest of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the State Department announced yesterday that it will lay off more than 1,300 people as part of a dramatic reorganization of the agency.

Meanwhile, today, outside the State Department building, laid-off employees were seen leaving with their belongings in their hands and in tears, greeting their colleagues.

Outside the State Department premises, hundreds of employees and former employees of the State Department gathered in solidarity and protest against this initiative.

They applauded their already fired colleagues and simultaneously protested with banners and chants against the Trump administration's purge.

The layoffs will affect 1,107 civil service officials and 246 foreign service officials, but it is not known whether Yuri Kim is on the list of people who have left the department.

Meanwhile, in another video, Yuri Kim is shown comforting a DASH employee who was part of the layoff list.

Foreign service officers who receive “Reduction in Force” (RIF) notices on Friday will be placed on administrative leave for 120 days before they officially lose their jobs, according to the announcement. Most civil servants will be placed on leave for 60 days before their dismissal becomes effective.
