Elche secured an important 2-1 victory over Mallorca in a direct survival match, valid for the 29th week in La Liga. The match was decided in the second half and ended with a dramatic moment at the end, where Vedat Muriqi missed from the penalty spot.
After a goalless first half, Mallorca took the lead in the 59th minute. Pablo Torre, on loan from Barcelona, scored with a powerful shot from outside the area, giving the visitors the lead.
Elche's reaction was swift. Just three minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Rafa Mir equalized. The home team turned things around in the 72nd minute, when Tete Morente headed in the second and winning goal.
In extra time, Mallorca were awarded a penalty after VAR intervention for a handball inside the area. Vedat Muriqi, who has scored 18 league goals this season, took the responsibility.
However, the Dardanian striker failed to convert, as his shot ended up outside the box, missing the opportunity to secure a point for his team.
With this victory, Elche climbs to 29 points and surpasses Mallorca in the standings. Meanwhile, Muriqi's team drops to 18th place with 28 points, entering the danger zone.
