Argentine football star and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi has said he hopes to play in the 2026 World Cup, although he admits his health will dictate his role in the competition.
In an interview with NBC News, the 38-year-old hinted that he would only play in soccer's biggest competition, which will take place next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada, if he is 100 percent fit.
" I will evaluate this every day when I start pre-season next year with Inter (Miami) and see if I can really be 100% ready, if I can be useful for the group, for the national team and then I will make a decision," said the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
"I'm very impatient because it's the World Cup. We come as the reigning champions and being able to defend it on the field again is spectacular because it's always a dream to play with the national team, especially in official competitions, so hopefully God will allow me to do it once again ," he said.
After qualifying for next year's World Cup during the September international window, Messi told the media that he would wait to make a decision regarding his participation in next year's competition.
" As I said before about the World Cup, I don't think I'll play again. Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won't make it ," the former Barcelona and PSG star told reporters after the 3-0 win over Venezuela.
Messi continues to be of the same opinion and based on his sporting form he will decide whether he will be part of Argentina, leaving the football world in a state of anxiety.
