After 14 years at the helm of the French national team, Didier Deschamps has decided to step down. An era full of glory, excitement and trophies is coming to an end, but also with the big question that will accompany his legacy: Did France manage to deliver everything it promised with its golden generation?
Deschamps took charge of Les Bleus in 2012, at a time of identity crisis following scandals and failures. He rebuilt the team from the ground up, creating a compact and competitive group, bringing to the stage a generation of players who would become world stars: Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kanté, Karim Benzema and many others.
The climax came in Russia 2018, when France won the World Cup for the second time in history. Deschamps became the second French coach, after Aimé Jacquet, to lead the national team to the top of the world. But that triumph was followed by a series of relative disappointments: the lost final in Euro 2016 (at home), the lost final in Qatar 2022 and the final elimination by Spain, which marked the symbolic end of his cycle.
Despite winning the World Cup and reaching several finals, Deschamps failed to transform this extraordinary generation of talent into a dominant dynasty like Brazil in the 1970s or Spain from 2008-2012. This remains his greatest flaw.
"From triumph in Russia to tears in Qatar and defeat to Spain, Deschamps' journey has been a mix of greatness and disappointment ," the analysis after his departure reads.
Now the door has opened for a new chapter. The name that rings most strongly as a replacement is Zinedine Zidane, the French legend who has long been linked with the position of national team coach.
Deschamps leaves as one of the most successful coaches in France's history, with a World Cup, a Euro final and a total reconstruction of the national team, but also as the coach who is left with the open question: What would have happened if this talented generation had been managed differently?
His story will be written in golden ink for the success of 2018, but with a shade of nostalgia for what could have been.
