An unusual scandal has erupted in Senegalese football, after the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) revealed that the national team doctor, who had served for about a decade, did not have the right profile to cover the needs of an elite team.
FSF President Abdoulaye Fall stated that Dr. Abderahmane Fedior is a gynecologist and obstetrician by profession, admitting that this fact was only ascertained after Senegal's elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
"Our team doctor does not have the academic training to support our athletes. This is something I discovered quite late, because Dr. Fedior is a gynecologist by profession ," Fall said.
The head of the federation took responsibility for the situation, stressing that the doctor did not have the necessary qualifications to manage athletes at an international level. According to him, some footballers had even shown hesitation to be treated by him, due to the mismatch between his specialization and the demands of professional football.
After the discovery, the federation appointed sports medicine specialist Dr. Jean-Marc Sene to the medical staff.
However, the Senegalese Sports Medicine Association rejected the federation president's statements, calling them "baseless and defamatory." According to the organization, Dr. Fedior, in addition to specializing in gynecology, also holds a degree in sports medicine from Cheikh Anta Diop University.
The episode comes at a turbulent time for Senegalese football. In addition to the early elimination from the 2026 World Cup, the federation has also faced administrative problems, including delays in player bonus payments and the lack of a valid contract for coach Pape Thiaw, who was fired along with his coaching staff after the tournament's failure.
