The 2026 World Cup could go down in history as the most famous World Cup record. From Germany legend Miroslav Klose's 17 wins and 16 goals, to the five World Cup appearances of Mexico's Antonio Carbajal, Andres Guardado, Rafael Marquez and Germany's Lothar Mateusz, many historic statistics are at stake. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are in particular the spotlight.
Six World Cups for Messi and Ronaldo
Messi and Cristiano currently share the record of five World Cup appearances with Carbajal, Guardado, Marquez and Mateus. By appearing in the 2026 World Cup, they will become the first players in history to have played in six World Cups. Guillermo Oçoa will also be in his sixth World Cup, but he did not play in the 2006 and 2010 editions.
Klose's 17 wins, with Messi in pursuit
Klose has recorded 17 wins in 24 World Cup matches. Messi has 16 and needs just one win in the next tournament to equal or surpass the German.
Klose's 16 goals under the threat of Messi and Mbappe
With 16 goals, Klose is the top scorer in World Cup history. Messi has 13 goals, while Kylian Mbappe has 12. Both could break this record.
Batistuta's two hat-tricks
Gabriel Batistuta is the only player to score two hat-tricks in World Cup history. Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane and Gonçalo Ramos are all aiming to break the record.
Cafu's three finals
Cafu is the only player to have played in three World Cup finals (1994, 1998 and 2002). Messi and Mbappe have two finals each and could equal or surpass him.
10 clean sheets for Shilton and Bartez
Peter Shilton and Fabien Barthez hold the record of 10 clean sheets in the final stages. Thibaut Courtois has seven and could approach the record.
Helmut Schön's 25 matches as coach
Helmut Saint holds the record with 25 World Cup matches officiated. Didier Deschamps has 19 and could surpass him if France reaches at least the semi-finals.
Pepe's goal at the age of 39
Pepe is the oldest goalscorer in a World Cup knockout match. His record is under threat from Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Edin Dzeko.
Rehagel's age record
Otto Rehhagel led Greece to the 2010 World Cup at the age of 71, a record that is expected to be broken by Miroslav Kubek (74 years old) and then by Dik Advokat, who will be 78 years old.
11 matches as a substitute for Denilson
Denilson holds the record for most appearances from the bench at a World Cup, with 11. Marcus Rashford currently has nine and could break that record at the 2026 World Cup.
