Five years after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the event's anthem, "Waka Waka," continues to attract attention. An investigation recently revealed that FIFA has profited around €8 million from the song's revenue, through Sony Music.
The money was supposed to be distributed to charities chosen by Shakira and the band Freshlyground, who participated in the song. However, representatives for the singers and Sony Music say they have no information on how FIFA has used the funds.
The report also shows that proceeds from the song, which has reached over 4 billion views on YouTube, were used to build sports centers in 15 African countries, through a charity that, according to documents, has been closed since 2014.
In an official response, FIFA stressed that it continues to invest in these sports facilities through copyright revenues, without providing details on the amount used.
