Italian football legend Alessandro Del Piero has reacted strongly after Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup, describing the situation as alarming for the entire football movement in the country. The former Azzurri striker, world champion in 2006 and author of 95 appearances for the national team between 1995 and 2008, has not spared criticism of the current situation.
Speaking on the show "Sky Calcio Unplugged", Del Piero openly expressed his negative emotions after missing out on the chance to qualify, also referring to the March 31 defeat in Zenica.
" There are many negative feelings; sadness, anger, disappointment... the first time was a shock, the second time a nightmare, the third time embarrassing to justify ," he said.
He stressed that the responsibility does not fall on a single individual, mentioning names like Gattuso, Buffon or Gravina, but the problem is deeper.
" We are far behind, not only by our standards, but also by those who have started from scratch like France or Germany, who have courageously taken new paths. Today, the solutions seem very far away ," Del Piero added.
" We have to start over "
According to the former Juventus captain, the only way out is a complete restart, with commitment from all actors in Italian football.
" Each of us must have the desire to react and restart everything from scratch, to re-enter the game, to study and work to solve things with enthusiasm ," he declared.
Deep reform, not individual solutions
Del Piero rejected the idea that the crisis could be resolved with partial changes or with a single figure at the helm.
" I believe in team play. There should be no sacrifice and we should not expect one person to solve everything ," he said.
He raised concerns about some of the system's main problems:
absences in age groups
infrastructure and stadiums
investment level
" We need to analyze what's wrong with men's football, because women's football and other sports are doing extraordinary things ," he added.
Loss of identity and the need for humility
Another element that Del Piero highlighted is the loss of connection with local football and tradition.
" We need to take a step back and accept that we are no longer the best, we are not even second or third. We need to put pride aside, we need humility ," he said.
The need for long-term projects
In conclusion, Del Piero underlined that the solution is not only related to finances, but to building a long-term strategy.
" It's not just a question of money; you need projects with steps that must be respected. It takes time ," he said, giving concrete examples: " Thanks to time, Gasperini at Atalanta became immortal. Ancelotti at Juventus seemed the weakest coach in the world, but that's not the case ."
He closed with a clear message about player development:
"Footballers are not built, but shaped and helped to reach the highest levels ."
