Former Spanish national team coach Vicente del Bosque, who won the World Cup and the European Championship with the "Red Fury", declares that managing Real Madrid "is easier than being at other clubs".
He believes that the biggest task of a coach today is to know how to “use the whole team” to manage a busy schedule, as well as to know how to “build a good and healthy dressing room.” Del Bosque, who turns 75 today, shared these reflections in an interview on the occasion of receiving the “Maria de Villota 2025” Award in honor of his career at Real Madrid and with the Spanish national team.
" I've always tried to treat people the same way they treated me when I was a kid. I've always tried to build a good, healthy locker room. That's very important ," the coach declared.
He also stressed that the main role of a coach today is to know how to manage the team in a context where there are matches every three days. " You have to use everyone. That's the main job of the coach now ," he adds.
Del Bosque admits that he always thought his coaching career would be limited to developing young players, until he took over as Real Madrid coach in 1999 after a few games as interim coach in 1994 and 1996. In his opinion, " being at Real Madrid is easier than being at other teams. We had won in 1998, 2000 and 2002. We had a great run. Madrid achieved something extraordinary ," he concludes, recalling the two European Cups won during his four seasons at the helm of the Merengues.
