Copy Bruno Mars song? Miley Cyrus responds to accusations of plagiarism

Miley Cyrus is facing a plagiarism lawsuit after she is accused of copying melodic, harmonic and lyrical elements from Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" in her hit "Flowers." The lawsuit was filed by Tempo Music Investments, which owns the copyright to Mars' song, and also includes Cyrus' writers Michael Pollack and Gregory Hein, as well as Sony Music and Apple. The lawsuit claims that "Flowers" wouldn't exist without "When I Was Your Man," pointing out similarities between the two songs that were noticed shortly after the release of "Flowers" in 2023.

So Miley has dismissed the copyright lawsuit. In response, Cyrus' lawyers have filed a motion to dismiss the suit, arguing that "only owners of exclusive rights can sue for copyright infringement" and "a co-author lacks exclusive rights and, therefore, also has no right to sue for infringement
