An unusual event has shocked public opinion in Brazil, where a social media influencer has ended up in jail after allegedly staging her own kidnapping for personal gain.
It's about 27-year-old Monica Fraga, who was arrested after investigations revealed that the dramatic story she had shared with followers a year ago was not true.
At the time, Fraga had published a video in which she appeared in tears, claiming that she and her husband, Lucas Fraga, had been attacked by armed men, kidnapped and held hostage in a forest area, where, according to her, they were forced to pay a large sum of money for their release.
But, the authorities' investigation revealed numerous inconsistencies in her story. According to the police, the event turned out to be a scenario organized by her, with the aim of attracting media attention and increasing her followers on social networks.
"As the investigation progressed, indications emerged that the suspected kidnapping for ransom was in fact nothing more than a conspiracy between the alleged victim and one of the perpetrators," a police spokesman stated.
According to authorities, her husband was unaware of the plan. Three other people are suspected of being involved in the scheme, one of whom is currently in prison for other crimes, while another died before he could be arrested.
Police also conducted searches at the apartment of a third accomplice, who is suspected of having benefited from the money claimed as ransom.
Fraga currently faces serious charges, including extortion, obstruction of justice and misuse of police resources. On the other hand, her legal defense has requested that the security measure be reduced to house arrest, arguing that she is the mother of young children.
The case has sparked widespread debate about the limits of ethics on social media and the pressure for fame, bringing the phenomenon of extreme staging for clicks and followers back into focus.
