At the National Assembly of the Democratic Party, gathered this Saturday at the Palace of Congresses to seal the statutory changes and the election of new leadership structures, Sali Berisha made a public 'mea culpa', admitting that he has made mistakes during his political career.
However, even though he spoke about personal mistakes, Berisha did not specify any of them, choosing to focus most of his speech on attacks on Edi Rama, whom he accused of setting up a "narco-state" and attempting to annihilate the Democratic Party.
"I have made mistakes in life and in my career," Berisha declared to the delegates, but added that he has never made a mistake in trusting the Democrats.
In a speech with strong political tones and constant references to the battle to "re-establish" the DP, Berisha presented himself and his supporters as "marathon runners" who have fought for five years against a system that, according to him, had set its sights on the disappearance of the opposition.
Berisha accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of continuous attempts to weaken and control the opposition. The leader of the Democrats claimed that Rama had aimed to turn the DP into a “facade opposition” and that the Prime Minister had launched an attack to destroy the Democratic Party in collaboration with what he described as an international mafia.
"We had many efforts over the decades to strengthen pluralism. There came a moment when Edi Rama set as his fathers' morality and platform that of his fathers and launched an attack to annihilate the DP, to transform it into a facade opposition, to buy it. But this party is not for the market, it is for morality, ideals and values. It is neither bought nor sold and it is never defeated. That is why we rose, at a time when it seemed as if even the earth and the sky were against us," said the leader of the DP.
Meanwhile, while making this mea culpa in his opening speech, Berisha has chosen the same names for the new structures of the Democratic Party that will be voted on in the Democratic Assembly.
The DP National Assembly is expected to approve changes to the statute and elect the new National Council, moves that will pave the way for the reformatting of the party's leadership structures for the next three years.
The work of the Commission is led by Ivi Kaso, while the changes to the statute will be presented by Gazment Bardhi. Meanwhile, the changes in the reorganization of the diaspora and the digitalization of the party will be presented by Nikola Kedhi and Grigels Muçollari.
