After years at Alex Soros' side, Edi Rama tries to establish ties with the Trump administration, but a wrong photo in Munich and a message from Washington block every door. Because this story cannot be hidden with an absence from the Summit...
At the EU Summit taking place in Tirana, a name that until yesterday was the charm of every international table alongside Edi Rama is missing: Alex Soros. The character who appeared at every Open Balkans forum, at every EU meeting with Albania, in every important photo, often sitting closer than any minister, more privileged than any official representative of the Albanian state. His absence from this summit is not a coincidence. It is a signal. And for Rama, it is an embarrassment.
Because for years, Rama has built his international profile on the framework of the “Soros man”. With Alex at his side, with his foundations behind his speeches, with his influence on the media and the diplomacy that nurtured Rilindja as a Western geopolitical project. But today, Edi Rama is trying to erase this chapter from his biography. And the reason is one: Donald Trump is back. And with him, the files, the memory, and the red lines of the new administration have returned.
Since the November elections, Edi Rama has quietly begun to distance himself from Alex Soros, no longer inviting him to any official events and no longer sharing any photos with him. When the two met in Davos, on January 21, 2025, it was Alex who published the photo with Rama – as if to remind the public and the Trumpists in Washington that the relationship still exists. Rama, for the first time, remained silent. He did not post, did not comment, did not react.
But Rama's script was burned again. On February 14, 2025, at the Munich Security Conference, Alex Soros again published a photo with Edi Rama, taken in the back of the building where the conference was held, exposing him as a politician who plays with two gates: through Soros he seeks influence in Brussels, while behind the scenes he tries to get closer to Trump. It was a silent blow, a symbolic revenge that embarrassed Rama in front of both parties.
And the final blow came from Donald Trump's Chief of Staff, Susan Wiles, who sent a clear message to US Vice President JD Vance's team:
“The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, is a puppet of Soros. Stay as far away from him as possible.”
That was enough for the meeting Rama had been dreaming of for weeks with JD Vance to burn overnight. And with it, the ambition to turn a new page with the Trump administration, which now has much less patience for the old masks with diplomatic smiles, was also burned.
This is why Alex Soros is not in Tirana for the EU Summit. It is not that he would not be welcome. It is because Rama does not dare to approach him publicly anymore. Because the connection with Soros, from a shield, has turned into a political stain that closes doors in Washington and jeopardizes any attempt to enter the new geopolitical orbit.
But it's all too late. Because in the digital archives of the internet, there are all the photos with "brother Alex". There are the statuses with "the man who helps Albania". There are the speeches that proclaimed Rama as an exponent of Soros' global structures, present at every Balkan meeting, at every forum where Albania was treated as an experiment of the "Open Society" model.
Now, when the moment has come to connect with Trump, Rama wants to forget what he has built himself for more than a decade. But political history does not forgive. And diplomatic scenes do not forget. Once a Sorosist, always a Sorosist. At least for Trump.
And now that Alex is no longer in the front row of photos, Rama has no one to take a picture with. Because Trump doesn't accept it. And Soros doesn't forgive it./ Pamphlet
